#37 Portrait of a woman in finance: Emilie Jonckers
1) Can you shortly present your role as today in the organisation?
I am the HR Manager for MeDirect Belgium, we tackle all the HR-related questions going from Payroll and recruitment to compensation and benefits, and the office aspects.
2) What brought you to finance?
I was brought into finance by accident. I was working with a recruitment agency that proposed me several positions and that’s how I joined MeDirect.
3) What did you learn recently regarding gender equality?
I think I’ve always been protected since the beginning of my career. Luckily, I never had to face discrimination based on my gender. I always worked in an environment where women and men were equal. I’m aware that in Belgium we are doing quite well in terms of gender equality. Yet, certain positions are still mainly occupied by men. Some women also prefer to have a 9-5 job, it’s difficult to tell if it’s their own choice or if it’s because of the glass ceiling, their partner making the decision for them, ...
4) What was one of the decisions that had the most impact on you or your career?
I felt that I could no longer evolve in my previous job, so I decided to move to a new position. This change allowed me to grow in my career.
5) Any message to share with female students interested in finance, or with young women starting their career?
You know yourself better than anyone else. If you feel like you want to do something, never let others bring you down.
